Health Awareness Month part 3

Fatigue in the workplace can impair employees’ to perform their jobs at the highest level possible. Symptoms of fatigue often include drowsiness, mood changes, loss of energy and appetite, headaches, lack of motivation, lack of concentration, and lack of alertness. Trouble sleeping and constant fatigue can lead to more serious sleeping disorders and carry over negative effects into the workplace. These negative effects can result in decreased productivity and lower morale throughout the office. So, what can we do to get a better night’s sleep?

A few ways to improve your sleep and avoid fatigue include:

  • Striving for 7-8 hours of sleep a night. Your body needs time to rest and recover and getting in the right amount of sleep is critical towards remaining healthy and rested.
  • Keep a regular schedule. Get into a routine and stick with it, doing your best to go to sleep and wake up at the same time each day – including weekends.
  • Create the right sleep environment. Television, cellphones, laptops, and other electronics before bed make it difficult to go to sleep and can add distractions keeping you up late. Set a comfortable temperature and keep the room with sufficient darkness.

These tips can help create the proper elements towards improving your sleep. It is also important to note that other healthy habits can lead to better sleep and an overall healthier lifestyle. These tips include:

  • Eat Healthy. This can help you feel energized throughout the day and create better sleeping habits. Drinking water throughout the day to stay hydrated and avoiding eating big meals right before going to bed are also important.
  • Regularly exercising can help you feel better throughout the day and help get a good night’s rest, but avoid strenuous exercise close to bedtime as this can increase adrenaline and make it difficult to go to sleep.
  • Avoid caffeinated drinks like coffee or soda 3-4 hours before bedtime.
  • Don’t drink too much alcohol before bed as it can reduce sleep quality.

Good sleep can be the first step towards creating a happier, healthier lifestyle. Well rested employees will create a more productive workforce with good synergy.

Well well everyone!

Health Awareness Month Part 2

The flu shot has been very controversial for many years. It is up to you if you want to get it, but here is what the the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), says about why you should get it:

The estimated number of flu illnesses prevented by flu vaccination during the 2015-2016 season was 5 million – as many people use Denver International Airport in one month! If this statistic isn’t enough to make you want to get a flu vaccination and avoid the flu this season, here are a few more reasons you need a flu shot today.

1. The flu can make you miss work

Flu season results in more illness and sick time and employees typically miss an average of 5 days. In fact, according to Flu.gov, the flu accounts for 111 million lost workdays and nearly $7 billion in lost productivity and sick days annually.

2. You can protect not only yourself, but family and coworkers

The flu virus spreads easily, and the more immunizations people get, the less likely it is to spread throughout the population because more and more people will be protected from it. You can get the flu by touching something that has the virus germs on it like a doorknob, keyboard, stapler, or other common office supplies and then touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. The flu shot can help minimize the spread of these germs.

3. The flu vaccine is affordable and convenient

Most pharmacies like CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, etc. will conduct the flu shot quickly and easily without long wait lines or requiring appointments. These pharmacies will accept insurance for the vaccine, likely resulting in little to no copay for you. Even without insurance, there are local health clinics who offer free vaccines, or if you are required to pay, a flu shot only goes for about an average of $30 – well worth the price!

For employers, onsite flu vaccinations are always a great idea. This lets employees quickly and easily get the flu shot without ever having to leave the office. So, employees won’t need to leave the office to get the shot, and won’t be missing from the office for sick days! Employers can get started with free onsite free onsite flu vaccinations here.

4. It's a new year

You got the flu shot last year, so you should be good this year right… wrong! Different flu strains circulate every year, so the strains that make up the flu vaccine change along with them. Getting the flu shot as early as possible is a good idea as It generally takes about 14 days for immunity to build to fight the virus.

February is Heart Health Month

February marks heart health month. And as the tweezers can be part of helpful health kits with tic removals and a good tool to have in your medicine cabinet for splinters and beauty supplies, I thought that I would add to the blog and talk a little about health during flu season.

This is a great time to learn more about how important good heart health is and take the necessary steps towards a healthier lifestyle. This month brings awareness about the silent killer – heart disease. If you didn’t already know, heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women. To help realize just how important our heart is, here are some interesting heart health facts below:

Heart Health Facts:

    • Only 27% of people can identify all the major symptoms of a heart attack and know how to call 911 immediately when they occur. According to the CDC, the major signs of a heart attack are:
      • Chest pain or discomfort
      • Upper body pain or discomfort in the arms, back, neck, jaw, or upper stomach
      • Shortness of breath
      • Nausea, lightheadedness, or cold sweats[Centers for Disease Control and Prevention]

About $1 in $6 US healthcare dollars is spent on cardiovascular disease each year. It’s the most costly condition in America. When you factor in lost productivity, the CDC estimates heart disease and stroke costs our country more than $320 billion a year. [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention]

    • The #1 killer of women in America is heart disease, more deadly than all forms of cancer combined. [American Heart Association]
    • An adult heart pumps more than a gallon of blood per minute – enough to fill 38,000 drinking glasses each day! [Cleveland Clinic]
    • Studies have shown yoga is effective in slowing down your heart rate, which can help lower your blood pressure. [American Heart Association]
  • Laughing may increase overall health. Research suggests a good laugh can increase your blood flow by 20%. The positive effects of this can last for 24 hours. [American Heart Association]

This knowledge of vital heart health information can help us realize just how important our heart is. More exercise and better nutrition are simple, yet effective ways to work towards a healthier lifestyle. Getting regular checkups or biometric screenings can help you assess your heart health and allow you to work towards healthier goals.

The Birthday Wish Process

There is so much that goes into publishing a book from the very first drafting of ideas to the finished product. I never got to ask my grandpa how long it took him to create his first tweezer, but knowing him, I bet it didn’t take him long!  He was a go-getter and didn’t stop until he was satisfied. I like that I’m following in the footsteps of my family with the business and taking on my own creations like writing. This past year has been a wrilwind for me and I’m just thankful for what I have. It took me a month to write my first book, but over a year to get it in the shape it is now, and two years to get it published. This week I just wanted to say (probably the most cliché thing I can, but…) follow your dreams. Even if something doesn’t work out the way you hope it will, you will never be left wondering what if. New experiences can always arise from everything we do, even if it doesn’t work out. And if it does, then yay!
